Jan Dumée is known for his rich and original compositions and guitar playing that draw on a wide range of sound, expression and musical styles. As a composer with a highly individual voice, his work is widely admired.
The music of Dumée has been described in reviews as ‘very creative’, ‘non-conformist in approach’, ‘ear-tickling’ and ‘knowing no bounds’. These qualities are evident in his work with ‘O Septeto Plus’, recorded with musicians from Brazil, Senegal, Argentina, Holland and Croatia. With the same ensemble he recorded the album ‘Rodinha,’ recognized in 1998 as one of the best Dutch productions in the world music category by Radio Holland, Conamus, and in many reviews. Since 1991 he has regularly visited Brazil for ‘work in the field’, enabling him to become a versatile composer in different musical styles.
From 2001–2006 Dumée performed as guitarist/composer in Holland’s foremost prog rock-group of all times, Focus, playing alongside Dutch icons Thijs van Leer, Pierre van der Linden and his good old schoolmate Bobby Jacobs. With Focus he recorded ‘Focus 8’ , ‘Live in South America’ and the DVD/CD ‘Live in America’. During this time, Dumée also recorded a solo album ‘Rio on the Rocks’ (released in 2005 on the Rock Symphony label), a blend of (prog)rock, jazz, Brazilian and classical music, with musicians from Rio de Janeiro.
In 2007 Jan Dumée, along with singer John Lawton (ex-Uriah Heep/Lucifer’s Friend) formed a new band ‘On The Rocks’, known as OTR, again with musicians from Rio de Janeiro. Their first CD ‘Mamonama’ was released in 2008 in the United States, Europe and Japan on the Lion Music label.
Since 2000 Dumée has been involved with musicians from Holland, France and Germany in ‘The Cubrabop Quintet’. Their CD ‘Cubrabop’, featuring the band’s original compositions, was released in April 2011.
His compositions of ‘Impressionistic Brazilian Jazz’ can be heard with the quintet, Dumee & Dijkgraaf Quinteto, comprising some of the finest virtuoso musicians in Brazil. Their first CD ‘Heloisando’ was released in 2011.
He has recently appeared with the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra of Barra Mansa (Rio de Janeiro) as arranger/composer, performing as soloist together with Wim Dijkgraaf.
